Central Church of Christ emphasizes traditional worship, Christ-centered preaching, and a warm, caring fellowship. We are committed to the task of reclaiming the faith and vitality of first century Christians. We believe that the model for the church is Christ Himself revealed in the New Testament. We are a church made up of a family of believers who have lived lives of sinners and now have a life of faith, hope, love, joy, and peace that comes from being in Christ and in fellowship with other Christians. We are located in Oak Ridge North, Texas, in the greater Houston area. We have members from The Woodlands, Spring, Kingwood, Conroe, and surrounding communities.

The pulpit minister for Central is James L. (Jamie) Sloan.  He was born in Tennessee, the son of a minister of the Church of Christ.  He attended Bible College in Temple Terrace, Florida — the same campus where Billy Graham attended.  He has served as minister for churches in Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, and in Ft. Worth and Houston, Texas.  He has held revivals in 36 states and spoken on 2 college lectureships.  His wife Glenna is also very active in church work — they have been married for 51 years.  Jamie says that his main focus in sermon preparation and presentation is trying to strengthen and inspire the believer and to make faith, hope, and love more appealing to members and prospective members.

Additional Details

  • Description:What would you think of a church whose members don’t babble in tongues, dance in the aisles, or heal broken bones? Or claim to have all the answers, but who, nevertheless, know Christ, the Great Interrogator, as Redeemer? What would you think of a church whose members wear no distinctive “religious” garb; receive no continuous, direct revelation (other than the New Testament); proclaim the gospel neither in stained-glass tones nor in circus-like acrobatics; avoid mistaking the “giddiness of the head for the illumination of the Spirit”; believe in feeding the flock rather than fleecing the flock? What would you think of a church whose worship depends on congregational singing, not on a robed choir or a musical group pounding out third-rate songs to the beat of electric guitars; services that are neither “high church” nor “low church” but “New Testament church”; whose simple services are not meant for entertainment but for encounter with God? What would you think of a church with no formal creed (other than the new Testament itself); no governing authority but that of the local congregation; a church with no perfect Christians, members freely acknowledging that they are sinners, saved by the grace of God; a church which is “not a museum of saints but a hospital for the sick”; members who press on for the “upward call of God in Christ Jesus”? What would you think of a church like that? What would you think of a church that doesn’t promise its members financial success or physical health but a cross to bear, a life to live, a duty to meet; a church which believes in the application of Christianity to all area of life — personal, family, community, nation; a church whose members break from the church building like a mighty army to strike down evil and uphold the good? What would you think of a church whose members, despite obstacles to faith and duty, find in Christ a surprising peace and an unspeakable joy? If you would like to know more about a group of believers trying to be Christians only (not the same as claiming to be the only Christians), let us hear from you or visit one of our services. We are the Church of Christ. Give us a chance to tell you our story.
